about

In "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," a hopeless situation is portrayed when thousands of orks trap the citizens of Rohan, their king, several of the original party of travelers, and the ranger Aragorn at Helm's Deep. Ryan Michael Galloway was inspired to write this song from Aragorn's response when Rohan's king asks what they will do. Aragorn says, "Ride out to meet them."

Hence was penned this ultimate song of defiance and honor, and, as Mr. Galloway puts it, "A fight song for just about anybody."

This acoustic version features several unusual sounds--including two from a Baroque instrument, the recorder. It makes a clear melodic statement in the musical bridge. The isolated whistle portion of the recorder, combined with a cupped hand, was used by Mr. Galloway to create something akin to a loon call in the intro and the bridge as well. At the same time, he uses a violin to produce an odd, almost windy, sound by bowing the violin while lightly running his finger up and down the length of the bowed string. As his finger hits the harmonics of the string, they quickly sound out with something resembling a bird chirping on a multitude of notes.

Ride Out

Words & Music by
Ryan M. Galloway

Someone said, “women and children first”
But our holding line won’t last
Don’t look now, but we’re surrounded
And our chances fading fast

The face of death, in iron masks
Or covered up in white
Oppression lives on all our flanks
And right on our front lines

Chorus:
Ride out!
Ride out!
It could be suicide
Ride out!
Ride out!
At least we know we tried
Face to face
Hand to hand
Look them in the eyes, it’s time to
Ride out!
Ride out!
I’ll see you on other side

There are many people, lived befor this age
That chose to take a stand
Fighting for our dignity
Or taking back our land

They found a way, to capture rage
And join their souls and hands
They paid the price, and set the stage
Now we must understand…it’s time to

Repeat Chorus
